About

The vision of Bread & Tongue Press is to publish books that are unique inside and out. Books are and can be a high form of art. There is something about reading and touching a book that is different from the internet, painting, music, design, magazines, etc.

We’d like to continue to make books by artists, thinkers, writers (sometimes one is all three) who we believe have something prophetic and eternal to say. We’d also like to honor the contents by making the book worth looking at, since so many books we love often have such practical or cheap design. Byzantine books had gold relief plates on the cover, because they believed the words were gold.

We’ve started with just one book, which is about gold, in a way. But there will be more.

A Little Book on Poverty & Glory was our first project. It has been nearly four years since I finished writing it. I knew right away that I wanted to publish this book myself and learn the process from start to finish. From writing to designing to printing to binding, every step was both costly and intensely creative. We wanted it to be a book worth keeping. Not every book we make will have this level of cost but we do want to make things that challenge the spirit, the mind and the eyes all at once.

We are currently working and musing on a few other projects, such as a book of photographs of women of all ages done by photographers who work normally within the fashion industry. We’re also beginning to put together a literary/art journal called Bert which will have a mixture of art, comics, social commentary and teaching on spirituality.

I’ve been writing and publishing for most of my life, and since my early 20s have been publishing my own zines or websites–but books are a whole ‘nother adventure.
